One of my favorite a cappella groups at GW is The Voice Gospel Choir. I’ve only seen them live a few times, but every time I do - they are so full of passion and energy. This was one of the first songs I saw them perform. You don’t get the full effect with the video, but their incredible voices coupled with insane visuals really made for a crazy performance.
As it got closer to spring break and the end of midterms, I started to get kind of nervous about going on my alternative break program. During the weeks leading up to it, we weren’t able to get a lot of details from the people we’d be working with. We knew that our area was urban/child poverty but we didn’t know a lot about what exactly our schedules would be like, where we would be, etc. I also wasn’t sure how it was going to be working together with the other people in my group. I just didn’t know what to expect and wondered if I should have just planned on going home, because I always had a blast with everyone when I did. I didn’t want to go on the trip with a negative attitude so I just focused on the fact that I’d be doing service for others, and that there was no way that could be unsatisfying.
Thankfully, I was right. Once we got to work - painting, ground work, hang drywall, etc - I remembered why I had wanted to be a part of the program in the first place. It felt great being able to lend a hand to people who really needed it. Everyone in the group got much closer and by the end of the week the vibe among all of us was just so different. There were some awesome people on the trip that I’m so glad I got to spend time with. Even the people who we were working with in Atlanta, a few people from Initiative for Affordable Housing and the Boys and Girls Club, were so appreciative and friendly towards us.
On one of the last days, we worked to help make rugs with Re: loom - a company that works with Initiative for Affordable Housing. This was really different from what we all had been working on all week but it was really cool seeing the process of how they worked to make these beautiful rugs out of old clothes that would otherwise be thrown away.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was the reflection we did every night. We would go around the group and talk about what we thought about the service and anything else that stood out that day. It sounds totally cheesy but it was just a really nice feeling at the end of day to recognize the small differences being made.
Atlanta itself is a pretty cool city. Granted, we didn’t get to see everything we wanted since our schedules were pretty packed, but it was interesting to compare different neighborhoods and experience something different.
The accents were great, too. Oh and everyone had dogs, that was so amazing.
I’ve been smelling the spring a lot lately, and it’s making me pretty happy on the inside.
I’m really looking forward to it being continuously nice weather soon so that this wonderful smell can take over my life and I can pretend like nothing else exists.
..It is getting to that really busy time in the semester where sleep is lacking and crazy thoughts are abundant. Aside from school work being extremely overwhelming, I’m really excited about the experiences I’ve been having and the people I’ve been spending my time with. It’s been great reconnecting with old friends and taking silly risks and just, being a stupid teenager. It’s pretty awesome and I’m kind of freaking out that my teen years are coming to an end.
Also, I’ve been making chai almost every day and it tastes pretty boss.
